Looks like personal and political wins the race…
Well in Skepta’s case especially, I mean, what an absolutely fantastic accolade – to win the UK’s most prestigious music award and gain even more respect whilst doing something you love and live for!
After beating the bookies fave; the late David Bowie, Skepta scooped the 25th Mercury prize award and the £25,000 winnings for his fourth studio album; Konnichiwa – an album he produced and released himself!
Judge Jarvis Cocker who won the prize back in 1996 whilst with his band; Pulp, said the winning choice came down to Bowie or Skepta.
Cocker was quoted to have said; if Bowie was looking down he would want Skepta to win.
To be honest, I couldn’t agree more, Bowie was down for those that try and push through despite everything – Skepta is definitely the poster child for that.
After founding the Boy Better Know label with his brother JME in 2005 Skepta has consistently been a mouthpiece for inner city youth, allowing middle England and those who have no clue, a musical snapshot into life on the streets or coming up in London.
He encourages the youth of today to find themselves in order to be the change that’s needed.
Skepta has undoubtedly helped to solidify Grime as recognisable genre across the world!
A truly, well deserved win!
